President Signs WOTC Extension Bill

Today President Obama signed The Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014 (H.R. 5771). This means that, along with 48 other previously expired provisions, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), Indian Employment Credit and Federal Empowerment Zones are enacted into law through December 31, 2014.

To realize the full benefit of the WOTC, employers should take the following steps:

  • Ensure all worksite managers have job applicants screened for eligibility under the WOTC program.
  • Continue to submit 8850 forms for job applicants hired after December 31, 2014.*
  • Work closely with their tax credits team to ensure all necessary supporting documentation has been submitted timely.

*Despite the limited extension, the deadline may be extended again in 2015, so as a best practice, continue screening job applicants and processing hires to help realize the full benefit of the WOTC credits in the year ahead.

Looking Forward

While this bill passing is a short-term solution, it doesn’t necessarily mean a slowdown in activity surrounding WOTC and other provisions. Lawmakers will likely address WOTC and other extenders early in 2015. ADP will keep you informed of changes as more information becomes available.
